Leeds United sent blunt Nick Pope and Callum Wilson transfer warning

Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith believes Leeds United will need more than Newcastle United pair Nick Pope and Callum Wilson to compete in the Premier League next season.

It is no secret the Whites have enquired about Pope's availability as they look to bring in a new No 1. Sources in the North East have indicated the England international wants to stay and fight for a starting spot at St James' Park.

Experienced striker Wilson has also been heavily linked with a move to Elland Road in recent weeks. United are expected to recruit a number of players between now and when the summer transfer window shuts on September 1.

In his latest column for BestBettingSites.co.uk, Smith said signing Pope and Wilson would not be "enough" to keep them up. He said: "They needed a new keeper. [Illan] Meslier struggled last season and got replaced by [Karl] Darlow, but Pope would be a good move. So I think that’s an upgrade, definitely.

"Callum Wilson, he’s had awful injury problems at Newcastle, hasn’t he? He’s got a lot of experience at the top level, but he’s 33 now. Week in, week out, I can’t see him doing it. So I think that they’re going to need more."

The former Arsenal and Leicester City has spoken of the importance of United strengthening their options in the final third. He said: "You look at who’s scoring the goals last season for Leeds, like Dan James, and Joel Piroe, the Dutchman; are these boys going to be good enough for the Premier League? James has already had a crack at it, and it’s not really worked, so I think Leeds still need more players."
