Andy Robertson has hailed Scott McTominay for proving Manchester United wrong by becoming a hero at Napoli.
McTominay has become an idol in Naples after scoring 12 goals en route to Napoli's Serie A title success, with the 28-year-old netting six times in the final seven league games of the season to help his side pip Inter Milan to the title by a point.
The Scotland international has been receiving Diego Maradona levels of adulation in the city after helping power Napoli to just their fourth top-flight league title having swapped life as a bit-part player at Manchester United for Italy in a £25.7million deal last summer.
United have just experienced the season from hell as they finished 15th in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool full-back Robertson - who also became a league champion this season - feels McTominay will have left them licking their wounds.

“I think he went over there with a point to prove,” said Robertson ahead of Scotland's friendly with Iceland at Hampden Park on Friday night.
“I think he wanted to prove Manchester United wrong and prove people in the Premier League wrong. He has gone over there and done that pretty successfully. That’s credit to him, credit to his attitude and his determination to be the best version of himself. Now he is a king over there."

McTominay made 255 appearances for United across nine seasons around the first-team, scoring 29 goals, but all too often he would be the first player to be dropped from the starting XI in times of trouble, or have his position changed by a succession of managers.
Under Antonio Conte at Napoli he has thrived though, and has become one of Serie A's best attacking midfield players.
“At Manchester United he probably lacked getting that run of games consistently, he was in and out and things like that," continued Robertson.

"He probably didn’t get the respect he deserves. Then he goes over there, puts in a magnificent season and fair play to him to end it with the league title.
“Even before he was at Napoli, his standards for Scotland were unbelievable. He’s getting better and better, he has taken it to a whole new level.”
