Earlier this week, Federico Chiesa had strongly hinted at the possibility of leaving Liverpool.
The 27-year-old also spoke of his desire to play for Italy at the 2026 World Cup and only regular football at club level can help him achieve that.
The Italian has now spoken to Corriere dello Sport in another interview and was asked about his ambitions with the Azzurri and how much he wants to become a central figure for the national team.
Chiesa told the newspaper: “Spalletti can give a lot to the team, we cannot fail the [World Cup qualification] objective for the third time in a row. We are Italy. I was pleased by the attention of the coach, I want that shirt back.”
The winger explained he’s so far been unselfish during his time at the Merseyside club and has never demanded regular game time.
“At the beginning I felt the frustration of the radical change and of being far behind the group, then there was the injury. Up until the match against PSG, Liverpool was ahead of everyone, in the semi-final of Carabao and among the favourites in the Champions League, which PSG won.
“Could I start to discuss the choices of Slot who has always been very respectful towards me, as well as the club? The desire to play was there, I put it aside, I understood the situation. I put aside every form of individualism.”
When asked about his future at Liverpool, Chiesa stated that he wouldn’t mind staying at Anfield and discussion will be held with his agent soon.
“The year is over. But it’s an experience I would do again. Soon I will sit down at the table with the club, Fali (Ramadani) and my family to find the best solution. I wouldn’t mind staying in Liverpool at all.”
Everything appears to depend on what plans Slot has for the Italian and what the club say to him. Chiesa’s priority is to play more and if Liverpool offer that in the 2025/26 season, staying may be the decision made.
Slot would have to change his use of Chiesa dramatically if the player is to get regular football at Liverpool next season.
