Scott McTominay's immortality cemented as he breaks record

Scott McTominay's rise to the very top of football has been further cemented after he smashed yet another record.

The Scottish international has been a revelation in Serie A since he completed a £25 million transfer from Manchester United to Napoli last summer.

The 28-year-old played a crucial role in Napoli's title-winning campaign, as the midfielder bagged 12 goals for Antonio Conte's side.

His immense contribution was recognised after the final game of the season, as he was named Serie A's Most Valuable Player (MVP). The award has been previously won by Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia - who left Napoli mid-season to set an insane record with PSG.

McTominay ended the season incredibly strong, scoring the opener in Napoli's final game with an impressive bicycle kick against Cagilari.

And it has now emerged that the shirt McTominay wore during that final game has now sold for a huge amount of money.

We're talking a massive £20,280.

And it's an historic sale, with the twenty grand purchase of the Scot's shirt now ranking in the top 10 for the most expensive football jerseys sold.

Who else makes the top 10?

Another Napoli icon tops the list, with Diego Maradona.

His Argentina shirt from the infamous 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against England, a game most known for his 'hand of god' goal, sold for an eye-watering £7.1 million.

It is another Argentine great, Lionel Messi in second place.

The jersey he wore in the 2022 World Cup final against France, a game which Argentina won on penalties, sold for £6.1million.

The next two tops on the list are also from World Cup finals.

Pele's jersey from Brazil's 1970 triumph over Italy went for £157,000, while Geoff Hurst's England shirt from 1966, in which he became the first player to score a World Cup final hat-trick, sold for £91,750.

McTominay not the only Man Utd academy product on the list

Manchester United icons take the next two spots on the list.

David Beckham's jersey from the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich, where United scored two goals in injury time to secure a historic treble, sold for £40,000.

Cristiano Ronaldo's debut shirt for United against Bolton Wanderers went for £39,000.

Completing the top 10 are Zinedine Zidane's 1998 World Cup final shirt (£30,000), Paul Gascoigne’s jersey from Italia 90 (£28,680) and George Best's top from 1969 (£24,000).

After McTominay's shirt sold for £20,000, the Scot now completes the top 10.

It is yet another sign of how his legacy has grown since making the switch to Naples last summer.

From being viewed as a squad player at Manchester United, he is now one of Europe's most valuable midfielders.
