Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes has signed a new long-term contract, committing his future to the club until 2029.
The 27-year-old was already tied down until 2027, but the fresh terms reflect his growing importance to Mikel Arteta’s project and Arsenal’s long-term plans.
Gabriel joined the Gunners from Lille in 2020 in a £27 million deal and has since made 210 appearances across all competitions. Over the past five seasons, he has developed from a raw and powerful defender into one of the most consistent figures in the Premier League.
He has also scored 20 goals for the club, becoming a regular threat from set pieces and outscoring every other defender in the league since his arrival.
The Brazilian formed a formidable partnership with William Saliba in the heart of Arsenal’s defence, a pairing that has become the cornerstone of the team’s recent progress under Arteta.
Gabriel was a mainstay in the side that kept the most clean sheets in the league over the last two campaigns. He was also named in the 2023/24 PFA Team of the Year and played a vital role in the Community Shield win against Manchester City.
His season was cut short in April due to a hamstring injury that required surgery. Arsenal’s form dipped in his absence as they dropped out of the Premier League title race and fell to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals.
Despite the setback, the club’s decision to extend his contract signals their belief in his long-term value and leadership. Gabriel has become one of the most vocal figures in the squad and a key figure both on and off the pitch.
“I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I’m so happy and I’ve learned a lot,” Gabriel said. “It’s an amazing journey and I’m proud to continue it. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club and my family loves it too.”
Gabriel’s renewal is expected to be the first of several this summer, with other key players such as Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli on similar contract timelines.
Arsenal are also pursuing reinforcements in midfield and attack, with Martin Zubimendi among their top targets.
