After Wirtz: Significant Liverpool update threatens another Bayern transfer

Cody Gakpo seems to be leaning towards extending his stay at Liverpool Football Club this summer.

The Merseysiders finished the 2024/25 campaign as the Premier League champions, with a 10-point lead over Arsenal in second.

The Dutch international played a key part in the season, registering 15 goal contributions (10 goals, five assists) in the English top-flight.

Barring a sudden u-turn, it seems more probable than not that Leroy Sane will call time on his stay at Bayern Munich this summer.

The Germany international is currently in talks with Arsenal and Tottenham. A departure would then leave us a little short on the left flank.

Gakpo, who is one of several players Bayern are looking at, could be one such option to swap in for Sane.

However, there are some doubts around the player and his camp’s true intentions in the summer window.

“We’ve heard that Cody Gakpo could imagine signing a new contract at Liverpool. So, Bayern Munich aren’t quite sure yet whether they’re just being used as a pawn in the poker,” Christian Falk exclusively informed CF Bayern Insider.

“In the past, when Uli Hoeneß was involved in transfers, Bayern have always had a Plan A when it came to transfers, but never a Plan B. Now, Max Eberl is working differently, and there are many players on the list. Gakpo is one of them but you can’t say that he’s at the top of the list.

“Bayern realise that it’s not an easy feat to bring a player from Liverpool to Munich. This is why they’re checking out the alternatives available to them on the market.”

There are other options in the Premier League

There’s no question that Liverpool’s No.18 would be an exciting potential replacement for our likely outbound winger.

As Mark van Bommel has already noted, too, signing Gakpo would be keeping in line with Bayern’s tradition of signing top-quality Dutch professionals.

Whilst we’re not opposed to the club pursuing this option, the last thing Vincent Kompany’s men can afford to do is get embroiled in a contract saga. And one we likely won’t come out on top of given the player seems to be leaning towards staying put on Merseyside.

Keep an eye on the situation as it develops, by all means, but there are alternatives available.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s Kaoru Mitoma, for one, has dazzled in the Premier League since his arrival in 2021.

There are, of course, question marks over his comparative output to Cody Gakpo, but it’s at least another “gettable” option in the market.
