Anthony Gordon’s Newcastle United career really took off during the 2023/24 season.
The winger endured a slow start after joining Newcastle United from Everton for £45million in January 2023.
It took Anthony Gordon a bit of time to get up to speed and meet Eddie Howe’s demands, while he often cut a dejected figure.
But that changed when the 2023/24 season arrived. Gordon was arguably Newcastle’s best player, scoring 12 goals and providing 16 assists.
He enjoyed a remarkable campaign, carrying on the momentum he had built up playing for England Under-21s at the European Championship. Gordon was named player of the tournament, as the young Three Lions won the entire competition.

Tino Livramento named in England Under-21s squad
The 2023 Under-21 European Championship was transformative for Gordon, and now it will hopefully have the same impact on Tino Livramento.
The 22-year-old has been named in Lee Carsley’s squad for the 2025 Under-21 European Championship in Slovakia. His selection comes after Thomas Tuchel snubbed Livramento for the senior side, suggesting that the plan was always for him to be involved at youth level.
Livramento is the only Newcastle United player in the squad. He will play alongside former Toon midfielder Elliot Anderson and Newcastle transfer target James McAtee.

Livramento can go to another level for Newcastle United
Livramento heads into the Under-21s Euros in a very different way to how Gordon did two years ago.
While Gordon used the competition to give him a lift and propel him upwards, Livramento can use it to take him to an even higher level.
The right-back has enjoyed a spectacular 2025, with a lot of it spent playing on the left of defence. He has shut down some of the Premier League’s most gifted right wingers, with Mo Salah, Jarrod Bowen and Bryan Mbeumo all struggling to get the better of him.
Livramento was exceptional in the Carabao Cup final, and he carried that form through to the end of the season as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.
But there is so much more to come from Newcastle’s number 21. Livramento was compared to Gareth Bale earlier in his career, while he is seen as someone who should be England’s first-choice right-back for the foreseeable future.
While Paul Mitchell thought Newcastle overpaid for Livramento, his ability has been clear for all to see since the day he arrived. He is only going to keep getting better, which should be a worrying thought for the Magpies’ Premier League rivals.
Newcastle invested in his potential, much like they did with Anthony Gordon. Like Gordon, Livramento has the chance to use the Under-21 European Championship as a springboard towards greatness.
