Scott McTominay hailed for unbelievable standards by ex-rival:'He wanted to prove Man United wrong'

Andy Robertson has hailed Scott McTominay for winning the Serie A title in his first season at Napoli.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay dominated the headlines in Italy after joining Napoli.

Then manager Erik ten Hag didn’t want to sell McTominay because he was proving to be an important squad player. Still, he left Old Trafford and immediately earned a higher status within the Napoli squad, starring in Antonio Conte’s side and contributing an impressive tally of 13 goals from midfield.

Ineos decided to cash in on a player they deemed surplus to requirements, but it backfired as United endured a disappointing season on the pitch. At the same time, McTominay became a legend in Naples.

McTominay is also one of the star players in the Scotland national team, along with Napoli teammate Billy Gilmour, and he’s currently on international duty, being praised by his counterparts.

Andy Robertson hails ‘king’ Scott McTominay for proving Man Utd wrong

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson claims United were wrong to sell Scotland teammate McTominay.

The full-back insists McTominay ‘didn’t get the respect he deserves’ at Old Trafford before his career-defining move to Italy.

McTominay’s impact on Napoli was positive throughout the 2024/25 campaign, but he scored the goal against Cagliari that propelled Conte’s side towards the Scudetto.

“I think he went over there with a point to prove,” Robertson said ahead of Friday night’s friendly with Iceland at Hampden, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“He wanted to prove Man Utd wrong and prove people in the Premier League wrong, and he’s gone over there and done that pretty successfully.

“That’s credit to him, credit to his attitude and his determination to be the best version of himself.

“Now he’s a king over there. At Man United he probably lacked getting that run of games consistently, he was in and out and things like that.

“He probably didn’t get the respect he deserves.

“Then he goes over there, puts in a magnificent season and, fair play to him, he ends it with the league title.

“Everyone knows how passionate their fans are so, for them to love one of ours, it’s pretty special for Scotland, too.

“They love Billy [Gilmour] too, so credit to the both of them for going over there, being successful and winning the trophy.”

What’s next for McTominay?

McTominay’s goalscoring record on the international stage has been one of the main positives for Scotland in recent times.

It shows that McTominay is performing for his club as well as on the international stage.

In 60 caps for Scotland, McTominay has scored 12 goals and he will be aiming to lead them to World Cup qualification.

Scotland have two friendlies coming up against Iceland and Liechtenstein, with McTominay expected to be involved in both games.

The Scots will travel to Denmark at the beginning of September for their next World Cup qualifying match against Denmark.
