Newcastle United have released a statement after Callum Wilson was linked with a Leeds United move.

The Magpies have qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons and as a result, could make a number of changes this summer.

This could represent bad news for the 33-year-old whose contract is set to expire at the end of June after five years at St James’ Park.

The Englishman’s contract situation has sparked interest from Daniel Farke’s side, with Newcastle now making an announcement ahead of the upcoming window.

Newcastle make Wilson announcement after Leeds interest

After earning promotion to the Premier League, the Whites are going to be interested in adding to their squad, ready for the campaign.

This looks likely to see a new striker option to come in, to provide competition for Championship golden boot winner Joel Piroe.

As a result, it is little surprise that the Magpies ace emerged as a target, especially on a free transfer, given his wealth of top division experience.

Leeds emerged as the frontrunners to sign Wilson in May, as the LS11 club looked to complete an “ambitious” swoop for the ex-Bournemouth man [talkSPORT, 16 May].

Now it appears that this potential deal for the number nine has been scuppered after Newcastle shared their retained list on 6 June.

This revealed that talks have kicked off between the north-east outfit and the Englishman over their futures, with new deals potentially still possible.

It is fair to say that this will come as a blow to Farke and Co., as an option to play Champions League football is likely to be more attractive than Elland Road right now.

Wilson could refuse Leeds United move

With Piroe, Mateo Joseph and Patrick Bamford already in Yorkshire, the addition of another new forward could prove to be difficult to manage.

Unless one member of this trio were to leave, Wilson would likely come in with concerns over his minutes after a difficult campaign at St James’.

The ageing forward won’t want to move on from the Magpies and remain as a second-string option, which is exactly what he could be in LS11.

As a result, a longer-term stay at Newcastle could prove to make more sense for the Englishman, in a blow to Leeds at this early stage in the window.
