Aitor Karanka wants England return – Snubs Real Madrid role, Middlesbrough vacancy not pinpointed as reason

Aitor Karanka has snubbed a role at Real Madrid as he wants to return to England where he previously had spells at Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City.

That’s according to Friday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo, who cover the situation around 51-year-old, loved by a large section of Middlesbrough supporters after building up a great relationship during his time there.

Real Madrid Femenino are searching for Alberto Toril’s successor and president, Florentino Pérez, offered the role to Karanka. The former Middlesbrough manager has turned it down because his desire is to find a new club in England.

Karanka started his coaching career with Spain U16 and moved to England when Boro appointed him as their manager in November 2013. He helped Middlesbrough secure promotion to the Premier League in 2016 and was sacked in March 2017.

He then had spells at Nottingham Forest, Birmingham City, Granada and Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Spaniard has been without a job since June 2023 and wants to return to a bench in England.

Earlier this week, Middlesbrough showed the exit door to Michael Carrick. Despite Karanka’s past ties with the Championship side, it’s to be noted the development at Boro isn’t directly pinpointed as the reason why wants to return to England.

Of course, if fans wanted to put two and two together and brighten up their Friday afternoon that way then there’s nothing to stop them!
