Exclusive: 28-year-old winger wants to leave Saudi Arabia with Birmingham keen

Al-Ettifaq winger Demarai Gray is exploring a move away from Saudi Arabia and GMS understands the 28-year-old wishes to return to the Premier League.

Gray joined Ettifaq from Everton when Steven Gerrard was manager and has gone on to make 54 appearances, scoring four goals.

Jamaica international poised to have options for fresh challenge

Ettifaq have been impressed with Gray's attitude and sharpness in the back-end of this season, but respect his desire to return to England. The Saudi club are looking for a fee in the region of £8million.

Newly-promoted Sunderland hold a historical interest from January but are yet to make a fresh approach to Ettifaq. Gray's former club Birmingham City are also keen and have made recent contact with Ettifaq, but it is unclear whether the Jamaica international is willing to return to St Andrew's, where he made 78 appearances between 2013 and 2016, or drop down to the Championship. Serie A side Fiorentina have made an approach to loan Gray.

Ettifaq are set for a busy summer and will look to add another goalscorer as Karl Toko Kambi is out of contract. Brazilian midfielder Vitinho is also set to leave on a free transfer, while the future of Jack Hendry is unclear as the Scottish defender enters the final year of his contract.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Alvaro Medran will remain at the club and goalkeeper Marek Rodak, who is currently on international duty with Slovakia, remains an important part of the Ettifaq project.

Ahead of next season, Ettifaq have been boosted by Moussa Dembele recovering faster than first expected from an Achilles tendon injury. The former Celtic and Fulham forward is now expected back in October, two months earlier than anticipated. Winger Joao Costa is also recovering from an ACL injury and is expected back in January.

Ettifaq hope to add three foreigners this summer and are open to outgoings as they look for a squad refresh and to challenge for a top six finish next season.
