‘Money Not a Problem’ – Djurgården Chief Plays Hardball Over Celtic Transfer Target

Celtic are reportedly monitoring Japanese defender Keita Kosugi as part of a broader reshuffle at left-back this summer, with Kieran Tierney already returning and Greg Taylor expected to move on.

Kosugi, currently at Swedish side Djurgårdens IF, has drawn attention following impressive performances in the Conference League, where he was recognised among the players of the tournament. The 19-year-old’s form has not gone unnoticed by the Hoops, with Celtic exploring potential defensive reinforcements ahead of the new season.

However, Djurgården’s sporting director Bosse Andersson has made it clear that the club are under no pressure to sell their key players. He further pointed out Kosugi’s rising stock. Despite acknowledging interest, Andersson played down any imminent movement.

He said: (Expressen), “It depends a bit on what happens. Money is not a problem. We have built incredible security and have a flow with players we’ve previously sold. But that’s not what determines whether we win matches — it’s about making long-term and wise decisions.

“Three players have stood out in the European Games. Keita Kosugi has been prominent and was in the team of the tournament. But it’s impossible to know what will happen. We are not negotiating at the moment, and as long as they are Djurgårds players, that is our plan — though we do have a backup.”

Kosugi would strengthen Celtic’s number of Japanese players and give them another option at left-back. With Greg Taylor expected to move on and continued worries about Kieran Tierney’s injury record, the club need someone ready to step in. At just 19, Kosugi has already made a strong impression this season.

Kosugi’s profile fits the mould Celtic have often targeted in recent windows — a technically sound, versatile player with room to develop and potential resale value. His ability to operate both defensively and in advanced areas would suit Brendan Rodgers’ system, particularly in games where full-backs are expected to play high and wide.

While no formal talks are underway, the Hoops are known to do groundwork early in windows, and interest in the Swedish-based defender may yet develop quickly. With the club aiming to sharpen up the squad ahead of European qualifiers, Kosugi remains one to watch as the summer unfolds.
