ESPN: £60m offer made – United up the ante in their pursuit of ‘incredible’ attacker

Manchester United have returned with an improved proposal to test Brentford’s resolve for Bryan Mbeumo.

The Red Devils submitted their opening offer midweek in a package worth £55 million; £45m upfront and £10m in add-ons.

It did, however, fall below the club’s valuation, prompting United to go back to the drawing board and reconsider their approach.

Ben Jacobs confirmed early on Friday that United were finalising their second bid, while ESPN have since claimed the new proposition totals over £60m. It remains to be seen how much of the sum will be forked out this summer, though.

Brentford are willing to play the long game and wait for their demands to be met after seeing United activate Matheus Cunha’s £62.5m release clause. They value their talisman in the same region as Cunha, which won’t come as a surprise given Mbeumo’s numbers last season.

The Cameroonian international oversaw a career-best campaign in 2024/2025, ensuring he broke the 20-goal benchmark for the first time with a goal on the final day against Wolverhampton Wanderers. He also recorded eight assists and, impressively, started every single match of the term.

It was revealed last weekend that Mbeumo, 25, had prioritised a move to Old Trafford this summer despite garnering concrete interest from the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur – all of whom would’ve granted him the opportunity to play Champions League football in 2025/2026.

Yet, he had his heart set on the 20-time champions, leaving it in the clubs’ hands to make a deal come to fruition.

Thomas Frank, who previously hailed the forward as ‘incredible’, has been resigned to losing Mbeumo for several months now.

In an interview with Sky Sports recently, he conceded that the Bees are ultimately a ‘selling club’ – but did assert that it would take a substantial fee to force the board’s hand into sanctioning his exit.

“If the price is right – and that’s going to be expensive – and is coming, then I’m sure the club will be open to it,”explained Frank.“I’ve said many times: we are a selling club. But at the same time, we have to reinforce that there are 10 clubs in the world that aren’t selling clubs.”
