Victor Boniface reportedly could leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer transfer window after previously being linked with Arsenal and Chelsea.
Boniface, 24, was set to join Al-Nassr in January in a deal said to be worth between £51-£59million. However, the Saudi Pro League club instead signed Jhon Duran from Aston Villa for £65million on their transfer deadline day.
As such, Boniface stayed at Leverkusen last winter despite reputedly agreeing to a £13million contract, which would have worked out at weekly wages of circa £240,000. However, after returning from a hamstring injury around the same time, the striker scored just twice in the second half of the season.
Fabrizio Romano now reports that new options are available on the market and adds that a good proposal for both sides could see Boniface leave. Several clubs were linked with the centre-forward this time last year after scoring 21 goals en route to Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga and German Cup while reaching the Europa League final.
Arsenal and Chelsea were among those credited with an interest. football.london understands, however, that Boniface is a fan of the Gunners, as reported in early January last year. The player then acknowledged that a week later on episode eight of The Obi One Podcast with John Obi Mikel.
"For me, right from a young age, I've supported Arsenal all my life," Boniface said. He also spoke highly of the club's former captain and now teammate, Granit Xhaka.
However, both clubs would face one major obstacle in persuading the player to join them following his admission that he 'does not really like the Premier League'. He did, though, clarify at the time that a preference for German and Spanish football would stop him from signing for a "good team" from England if one came in for him.
Asked during an interview with SportyTV in September if he could see himself playing in the Premier League during his career, Boniface replied, "No." He then explained that answer.
"I'm not just saying this because I'm playing at this level. I've been saying this since before I had an international passport and before I dreamed of going to Europe.
"I don't really like the Premier League. I prefer Spanish and German football.
"I'm not saying that if a good team came for me, I wouldn't go. But if I had to choose two countries I'd really like to live and play in, I'd choose Germany and Spain."
