Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães has signed a new long-term contract that will keep him at the Emirates Stadium until the summer of 2029.

The Brazilian centre-back had been in advanced negotiations for several months, with his previous deal set to expire in 2027. Securing Gabriel’s future was seen as a key objective for newly-appointed sporting director Andrea Berta, who has now delivered his first major success since joining the club.

Gabriel’s new contract is believed to be worth over £100,000 per week, reflecting his importance to Mikel Arteta’s plans. The 27-year-old had attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, with reports suggesting he could have tripled his salary with a move to the Middle East. However, the defender has opted to stay in north London, putting an end to speculation about his future.

In a message to supporters, Gabriel expressed his pride and commitment to Arsenal: “I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I’m so happy and I’ve learned a lot. I’m so proud of myself, it’s an amazing journey, and I’m so happy to continue it.

“I hope I win some trophies with this club because I love this club and my family loves the club, too. Arsenal is an amazing club and I’m so proud to sign a new contract. I love this club, I love the supporters, my team-mates, I love this stadium. I’m so proud and thank you for all the support. We continue together for the future.”

Gabriel joined Arsenal from Lille in 2020 and has since developed into a cornerstone of Arteta’s defence, forming a formidable partnership with William Saliba. He has made 147 appearances in the Premier League and scored 17 goals, more than any other defender in the league during that time, showcasing his value on both ends of the pitch.

Despite missing the final stretch of last season due to a hamstring injury that required surgery, Gabriel is expected to be fit in time for Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong, which begins on July 19.

Gabriel Magalhães renewal is expected to be the first of several major contract extensions, with Arsenal hopeful of tying down Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, Ethan Nwaneri, and Myles Lewis-Skelly to new deals in the coming weeks, particularly as Saliba continues to attract interest from Real Madrid.
