Championship loan move likely for £19m Chelsea midfielder

Chelsea starlet Omari Kellyman is likely to make a Championship loan move once he has recovered from injury, as per Ben Jacobs.

Chelsea arre no strangers to sending their top young players on loan to EFL clubs, with teams in the Championship, League One and League Two regularly benefitting.

Game time and senior exposure is crucial to the development of all young players, and Football League sides offer than in droves. They also benefit from having Premier League standard prospects in their ranks.

Now, with the summer window upon us, one prospect who could be EFL-bound is Omari Kellyman.

Writing on X, reporter Ben Jacobs says that once Kellyman has recovered from injury, he is likely to make a temporary move to the Championship. The 19-year-old has been left out of the Club World Cup squad to recover before his expected temporary switch.

No potential destinations are cited, but there is sure to be plenty of interest in the Chelsea prodigy as he looks for some vital first-team exposure.

An EFL start

It has been well documented that Kellyman made a high profile move form Aston Villa to Chelsea for a reported £19m in July 2924, but Derby County fans will point out that he was on their books first.

Born in Derby, Kellyman is a product of their academy and was only poached by Aston Villa in March of 2022 as the Rams battled against administration and lost a number of their top young prospects on the cheap.

Time will tell just who has eyes on the teenage midfielder, but perhaps he could prove to be an intriguing player for DCFC to look at given he got his start on their books.

Chelsea starlets in the EFL

Chelsea have seen numerous young players come through their academy ranks before moving down in the EFL permanently. There were a whole host of prospects who gained experience in the Football League over the 2024/25 campaign too.

In the Championship, Alfie Gilchrist and Caleb Wiley found action with Sheffield United and Watford respectively. Alex Matos and Zak Sturge spent spells with Oxford United and Millwall, while Leo Castledine was in League One with Shrewsbury Town.
