'The first time': Journalist shares why Bayern Munich have taken Florian Wirtz rejection 'doubly hard'

Florian Wirtz’s eventual transfer to Liverpool is one of the worst-kept secrets in football at the moment.

Wirtz has been the main topic of the 2025-26 summer transfer window thus far, with the Bayer Leverkusen ace turning down a move to Bayern Munich in the process.

Indeed, the amount of money Liverpool will have to spend to finalise his transfer hasn’t been decided upon yet, but judging from recent reports, everything seems to be heading in the right direction.

So it isn’t a surprise to see updates popping up left, right and centre regarding what stage of the negotiations all three parties are in.

Bayern Munich are hurt by the fact Florian Wirtz turned them down for Liverpool

As has been the case for many years, Bayern have often prised their rivals’ best talents and added them to their squad.

This transfer strategy has proved rather effective over the last few years, with Bayern being the most dominant team in the league by some distance.

Indeed, some moves for players such as Harry Kane and Eric Dier break this mould, but more often than not, Bayern’s team is full to the brim of Bundesliga talent.

Speaking to the CF Bayern Insider website, Christian Falk shared why Wirtz rejected Bayern, and he also gave an insight into how much he could be set to earn at Liverpool.

“It was a hard punch for the Bayern bosses to miss out on Florian Wirtz,” he said.

“You can understand the likes of Erling Haaland or Jude Bellingham deciding to leave the Bundesliga for top clubs, like Manchester City and Real Madrid, outside of Germany – as they’re not German.

“Going to Bayern Munich won’t matter as much to them. But it’s the first time that a German player decided against Bayern.”

“They were interested, and I think this is really, really hard for Bayern Munich.

“It’s disappointing to hear that it wasn’t even a question of money; it’s said that Wirtz will earn €20m-22m per annum at Liverpool.

“Bayern offered more – they would have paid about €24m – so, this is doubly hard for FC Bayern to accept.”

Florian Wirtz could be the driving force for Liverpool next season

The fact that Wirtz is already highly regarded as one of the best number 10s in the world is nothing short of spectacular.

Wirtz is still only 22 years old and has set the Bundesliga alight this term while also being one of Bayer Leverkusen’s most important players.

The 2024-25 season of Florian Wirtz in numbers.

His former teammate Jeremie Frimpong has already moved to Liverpool, with the duo likely looking forward to linking up with one another again next term.

A lot of Liverpool’s form this season has relied on the performances of Mohamed Salah, but with Wirtz now being added to their ranks, some of the pressure upon the Egyptian King’s shoulders will be lifted.

Indeed, one new arrival can’t turn a team into world-beaters, but with Wirtz’s vision and movement set to become a part of Liverpool’s team, it’s hard to see how they won’t be the ones to beat again in the Premier League next season.
