Arsenal defender Gabriel has signed a new four year contract - and now the club want to tie down his side kick William Saliba.

Brazil international Gabriel has given Arsenal a huge early boost by putting pen to paper on a deal until 2029 which signals the start of a push to get key contracts done this summer. France international Saliba, 24, is another who is about to enter the last two years of his current contract and Arsenal have already opened discussions about a new deal.

Gunners chiefs are confident that Saliba wants to stay despite interest from Real Madrid with the France defender happy in London and is believed to be ready to commit.

Bukayo Saka has also indicated that he wants to stay at Arsenal for the long term and there is confidence they can get that deal done with the England star also about to enter the final two years of his deal.

Arsenal would be reluctant to let any player of the calibre of Saliba run down their deal and run the risk of him leaving for free or for a reduced price, having seen Trent Alexander-Arnold go to Real Madrid on a free transfer.

But Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has targeted new contracts together with a busy summer transfer window as key to his first few months in charge.

Thomas Partey is out of contract but Arsenal have indicated talks are ongoing while Leandro Trossard has a year left and Gabriel Martinelli is another who has two years left. Gabriel turned down huge offers from the Saudi Pro League to stay at Arsenal as he has formed one of the best partnerships in the Premier League with Saliba.

Ex-Lille defender Gabriel has been a revelation at Arsenal since joining in 2020 for a deal worth around £27m and he says that career progression has been key to his happiness at the Emirates.

Gabriel told the club website: “I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I'm so happy and I've learned a lot. I'm so proud of myself, it's an amazing journey, and I'm so happy to continue it. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club and my family loves the club, too.

“Arsenal is an amazing club and I'm so proud to sign a new contract. I love this club, I love the supporters, my teammates, I love this stadium. I'm so proud and thank you for all the support. We continue together for the future.”
