Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic could both be pushed out this summer if Chelsea complete a cut-price deal for Mike Maignan, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about Chelsea‘s pursuit of the AC Milan goalkeeper.

Maignan is about to enter the final year of his contract at San Siro with no new agreement signed, and this led to an initial £10million bid from Chelsea despite the Blues being told of Milan’s £25m valuation.

Milan‘s failure to qualify for Europe next season means they may be forced to sell players after an eighth-placed Serie A finish, and sources have told Football Insider that this could open the door for Chelsea.

Maignan would be an immediate upgrade on Chelsea’s current options, and Football Insider sources have said that this could spell doom for both Sanchez and Petrovic’s prospects at Stamford Bridge.

Petrovic is set to return from an impressive loan spell at Strasbourg this summer, but with Maignan likely to be Chelsea’s automatic number one if a deal is completed, an immediate exit could be on the cards.

Maignan transfer to address ‘problem area’ at Chelsea

Former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in February that signing a goalkeeper is Chelsea’s “top priority” this summer, and Enzo Maresca sees Maignan as the answer.

Speaking on the new Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke said that Maignan would become the Blues’ number one straight away upon his arrival in West London, if they opt to up their offer from £10m.

“Chelsea see an opportunity to sign Mike Maignan due to him having one year left on his contract at AC Milan”, he told Football Insider.

“I don’t think the deal will be done at that price of £10million – with Milan failing to qualify for Europe it could still be done, and would be an improvement for Chelsea.

“Goalkeeper is a problem area for Blues… Maignan has been impressive in the Champions League for Milan and at international level with France.

“His arrival could mean offloads for the likes of Sanchez and possibly Petrovic as well, because Maignan will no doubt be the number-one choice if he does sign.”

Chelsea to force through transfers with Maignan close

With the Club World Cup on the horizon and Chelsea’s first match against LAFC being in just ten days’ time, Maresca is wasting no time in a bid to build a strong squad and address last season’s shortcomings.

Liam Delap is already through the doors at Stamford Bridge and will don their number nine shirt in the US this summer, but it remains to be seen which goalkeeper will have the number one on their back next.

Sanchez has run out of road in the eyes of Chelsea fans and Petrovic will feel he’s earned his chance, but both could soon be on their way out of West London as Chelsea look to upgrade between the sticks.
