Two WSL players out of WEURO 2025 and undergo surgery

The 2024/2025 Women’s Super League season has flown by incredibly fast. Chelsea won the league, remaining unbeaten while also securing the FA Cup and League Cup. Captain Millie Bright was one of the players who was on the pitch for almost every minute of every game, and that took its toll. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Laia Codina has been out of action since the end of February and recently revealed on Instagram that she has undergone surgery.

Millie Bright unavailable for Women’s EURO squad

The Women’s EURO 2025 will be hosted by Switzerland this summer. Following the Women’s Nations League matches, Sarina Wiegman announced her squad for the tournament. A day before the announcement, Millie Bright shared that she would not be available for selection:

“This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, but after careful thought and discussions with my team, I have decided to withdraw from the selection for the England squad ahead of Euro 2025.

“Football has given me so much, and representing my country has always been my greatest honour. My pride and ego tells me to go but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now, I am not able to give 100% mentally or physically.”

Knee surgery

A day later, Millie Bright posted a picture of her knee after surgery, “Successful op. Road to recovery begins.”

Statement from Chelsea: Chelsea can confirm defender Millie Bright has today undergone minor knee surgery. Millie will begin a period of rehabilitation with the support of the club’s medical department.

Laia Codina also to miss EUROP 2025

Arsenal defender Laia Codina has been absent from the pitch since the end of February due to a muscular injury. Despite working hard on her recovery, she was unable to return to full fitness after a series of setbacks.

Codina was initially called up for Spain for the Women’s Nations League but had to withdraw. She wrote on Instagram: “It’s been a tough few days but I’ve had a successful op. Focus turns to getting fully fit and supporting my teammates in the background.”
