Fabrizio Romano: Former Manchester United wonderkid set for Mason Greenwood reunion as…

The former Man Utd youngster is set to join a top Ligue 1 side in the summer transfer window.

Former Manchester United youngster Angel Gomes has reportedly agreed to join Marseille in the summer transfer window. The 24-year-old will become a free agent at the end of the month when his current deal with Lille is set to expire.

Gomes was not short of offers as he considered the next step in his career, with Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United supposedly two of the Premier League teams that were interested in a move. Fabrizio Romano claims he has chosen to remain in France though and will reunite with former United teammate Mason Greenwood at Marseille, who moved to the Ligue 1 side a year ago.

Taking to social media on Friday, the transfer guru posted: "Olympique Marseille reach verbal agreement to sign Angel Gomes as free agent! Three year contract in place. Despite proposals from Germany, England and Italy, Gomes’ on his way to OM."

Why did Angel Gomes leave United

Angel Gomes joined Manchester United at the age of six and progressed through their illustrious academy system to break into the first-team frame. The diminutive midfielder made 10 senior appearances for his boyhood club and managed just 46 minutes of Premier League experience before he rejected a new contract five years ago.

Gomes did not see a clear pathway for him at Old Trafford and opted to join French side Lille as he looked to ‘better himself’ as both a player and a person. He has scored 10 goals and registered 19 assists in 134 appearances for Lille and also shone on a season-long loan move with Boavista.

He made four senior England appearances under interim boss Lee Carsley last year but has been overlooked by new manager Thomas Tuchel. He will hope the move to Marseille revitalises his career and gives him the chance to represent England at the World Cup next summer.

Speaking ahead of his first England appearance last September, he said: "When I left [Manchester United] it was more the idea to better myself as a player and person. Being on the journey I went through I knew eventually I'd be able to create a pathway to be in this position I'm in now. It was difficult leaving the club I was in since six and heading into the unknown really for me personally. From then it's been an uphill trajectory, but also with a lot of difficulties and difficult moments going through it, but being in this position now makes it all worth it."
