What the Ruddy hell is going on at Newcastle United? - Club releases retained list and has us…

· 6 June 2025, 17:00

**Newcastle United have today released their retained list, which gives fans a good insight into who will be leaving the club this summer when their contracts expire.**

The Magpies have, especially under Eddie Howe, developed a big problem with letting players go, but we thought that maybe this year would be the year that changed.

Last summer, Newcastle released Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett a year later than they should have, but even then, at least one of them, likely Dummett, would have been retained had we managed to sneak into Europe.

This year, Newcastle had the chance to offload some deadwood by letting them leave the club, but only one player is confirmed to be leaving when their contract expires.

Why are we looking to keep John Ruddy?

--------------------------------------

As things stand, only Jamal Lewis is set to leave when his contract expires, which is hardly a surprise as we've been trying to offload him for years.

However, Callum Wilson and John Ruddy are both in talks over deals to remain at the club beyond their contracts expiring at the end of this month.

Every other player who had a contract expiring, including Mark Gillespie, who will continue to live the dream, has signed new deals. In the cases of Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth, we're genuinely pleased they signed up again, but when it comes to Gillespie, Ruddy and Wilson, we can't help but feel the club is wasting precious resources.

We still expect Callum Wilson to move on, with Leeds United interested

----------------------------------------------------------------------

There are, of course, no guarantees that Ruddy or Wilson will sign, especially given that Wilson's deal is rumoured to be pay-as-you-play and there is interest from other clubs in the 33-year-old striker.

We had thought that the [decision had already been made on John Ruddy](https://nufcfeed.com/eddie-howe-makes-difficult-decision-to-not-renew-contract-of-brilliant-player-as-newcastle-united-axe-first-player-from-squad-1355503), but it seems he's been offered a lifeline, which, given our surplus of goalkeepers along with the fact that we're actively seeking another one, makes zero sense to us.

What it does suggest, if we're trying to find a positive way to spin this, is that Newcastle are confident that some players will be sold this summer. Particularly goalkeepers. Having retained Gillespie and potentially Ruddy, that does suggest that there could be movement when it comes to Odysseas Vlachodimos, Martin Dubravka and/or Nick Pope.
