Thomas Meunier opens up on dream Man Utd transfer, ‘if they ever ask me…’

Every fan dreams of playing for their football club and Belgium international Thomas Meunier is no different when it comes to Manchester United.

Ineos have changed Manchester United’s approach to transfers since Sir Jim Ratcliffe bought a minority share in the football club and took control of football operations.

There has been more emphasis put on signing young talent than in previous years under Glazer ownership, but the American family remain the majority owners, much to the dismay of passionate United fans.

That was evident when United signed Leny Yoro, Chido Obi, Sekou Kone and Patrick Dorgu in the past year. The Red Devils are likely to add more young talent to Ruben Amorim’s squad this summer.

It’s a busy period for agents, and many of them will be trying to pitch their clients to Europe’s biggest clubs like United. In some cases, the player in question may go the extra mile to ensure a transfer gets the green light.

Thomas Meunier would ‘cycle’ to Manchester United

Lille defender Thomas Meunier has admitted his dream to play for United.

That dream is so strong that the Belgium international would cycle to Old Trafford.

During an interview with Gazet van Antwerpen, the defender discusses his career and his dream to play for United.

More United News

While Meunier was linked with a move to United in the past, it never materialised as he played for Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor and now Lille.

“If they ever ask me, I’ll cycle there [United],” Meunier said.

“But maybe it’s better this way. Suppose I play there and have a bad time. I wouldn’t want to hate Manchester United, because I love that club so much.

“I went to watch them a few weeks ago, against Bilbao. In with the fans, singing, à fond (fully). Je suis un vrai. (I am a real one). I go to watch them at least once every season.

“But of all the home games I’ve seen in all those years, they’ve only won two. You have to have a self cruelty side to be a United supporter, right?”

Not the first Man Utd plea from Meunier

If Meunier didn’t get his dream move to United in previous years, it’s unlikely that he will be joining Amorim towards the latter stages of his career.

Meunier admitted his admiration for United in previous years when he said he would not be able to turn his favoured club down.

Speaking to SFR Sport in 2017, Meunier revealed his support for United and could not resist a dig at one of our rivals when asked who he plays as in a football video game.

“Manchester,” he replied. “The real one, Man United. Because I’ve always been a fan.”

Like many of us United fans, the dream won’t become a reality anytime soon.
