'Special' Liverpool player sees another exit route close as Reds future takes new twist - opinion

Harvey Elliott has been a Liverpool player for some time now and, when called upon, has more often than not proven his worth.

Throughout the 2024-25 season, however, things haven’t quite gone the midfielder’s way with Arne Slot not giving him anywhere near as many opportunities as Jurgen Klopp gave him the season prior.

Indeed, Elliott can be used on the right wing if needed, but with Federico Chiesa’s arrival, his opportunities in that role have been even more scarce than those in his preferred position of attacking midfield.

As the Premier League season came to a close, the young Englishman’s future at Liverpool was being questioned, with Elliott even leaving a cryptic message about where his future could lie.

But, even with the amount of potential he has, it’s been hard for him to find a way out of Anfield thus far, with yet another exit route now blocked off.

Bayer Leverkusen want to sign James McAtee from Manchester City

As per a report from Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayer Leverkusen have now turned their attention towards Manchester City’s James McAtee ahead of Florian Wirtz’s expected move to Liverpool.

The journalist adds that the Bundesliga outfit are now ‘showing interest’ in the midfielder, but nothing ‘concrete’ has arisen just yet.

“VfB Stuttgart have added James McAtee to their shortlist. They are monitoring his situation closely and have already gathered all the relevant information,” he wrote via his personal X account.

What Liverpool may end up having to do with Harvey Elliott this summer

Even though Elliott is still just 22 years old, he’s a rather impressive player.

As mentioned, he was Klopp’s golden boy, with Neil Mellor even calling the former Fulham man a ‘special‘ talent.

Indeed, the form of Dominik Szoboszlai is what has kept him out of Slot’s first team this season, but with Wirtz now almost nailed on to join Liverpool, his chances of getting any game time will be even slimmer.

If the Anfield outfit can’t find a suitable permanent home for Elliott at the right price, then a loan deal could be the best option for all involved.

The Englishman has had a previous loan spell with Blackburn Rovers a couple of years ago, but another one could be exactly what’s needed to either prove his worth to Slot or even to another team that wishes to buy him.

Of course, these are all ifs, buts and maybes at the moment, but with the way things are headed at Liverpool this summer, it feels like there’s going to be a massive shake-up.
