Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver target still not healthy, waiting to sign

The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted wide receiver Gabe Davis on Thursday, but he is not quite ready to sign just yet, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport says health is the issue, as Davis is coming off knee surgery in November. He suffered a torn meniscus, which still has to heal in his left knee. In addition, he had suffered a PCL sprain in January 2024, adding some more concern to that knee.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released Davis with a failed physical designation. That clearly spells out that Davis is not healthy to practice right now, and there would be little to use for signing him.

He has already visited the San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, and the Steelers without inking a deal.

In just ten games in 2024, Davis caught 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns. That was enough for the Jaguars to cut him just one year into a three-year, $39 million deal.

His 2024 was far better, amassing 746 yards in 17 games on 46 receptions. His career year came in 2023, when Davis posted 836 yards and seven touchdowns on 48 receptions.

He torched the Steelers as a downfield threat in the Buffalo Bills’ offense before with Josh Allen, including a 98-yard touchdown.

He would fit the Steelers’ downfield, explosive passing attack identity. However, Davis has struggled to stay healthy and his production has steadily fallen off sharply.

Pittsburgh could consider him a fit, though, especially because his blocking attitude fits what they like at the position. A fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of UCF, Davis is free to sign anywhere, and will be unlikely to command an expensive offer.
