Packers Recently Signed a Legendary Canadian College Football Player

Earlier this Spring, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and other members of the Packers brass decided to bring in a relatively unknown quarterback for a workout.

That quarterback goes by the name of Taylor Elgersma, and he made his name in U Sports Football playing for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.

The Packers Eventually Signed Taylor Elgersma

After a successful workout with the team during their rookie minicamp period in May, the Packers offered Elgersma a contract, which now allows him to be a part of training camp later on this July.

Again, Elgersma comes from U Sports Football, which is the most popular and highest-rated amateur football league in Canada.

Former Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks QB Taylor Elgersma signed with the #Packers today, per his agent Craig Schaeffer.

Elgersma earned All-Canadian honors in both 2023 and 2024, along with the Hec Crighton Trophy, which is essentially the league’s Heisman Trophy.

Across his four seasons playing at Wilfrid Laurier University, Elgersma completed over 70% of his passes for 10,547 yards and 78 touchdowns.

At this point, he will be more of a developmental player for the Packers, and it will be interesting to see how he performs in practice down the road.

The Current State of the Packers’ Quarterback Room

Obviously, it is starter Jordan Love’s show, seeing as he is entering the second year of his $220 million extension and coming off of two solid seasons.

Behind Love on the depth chart is backup Malik Willis, who took snaps in seven games last year after Green Bay traded for him before the start of the season.

He started in the team’s Week 2 and Week 3 wins over the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans, and he proved that he is one of the most reliable backups in the league.

Behind Willis sits former Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford, who has had just one passing attempt in his NFL career.

Elgersma is the fourth quarterback on the depth chart, and he’ll have to perform admirably if he wants to make the 53-man roster just ahead of the regular season.

If nothing else, he has proven that there is a pathway for Canadian players looking to make it to the NFL, and it would be a whole new story if he finds a way to make the final roster.
