This Liverpool favourite could be bumped down in the pecking order from next season.
Liverpool are edging closer to another summer signing as they push to bring Milos Kerkez to Anfield. After long-running interest in the Hungary international, the Reds are closing in on a deal with Premier League rivals Bournemouth.
If a deal can be finalised, the 21-year-old will be challenging Andy Robertson for the starting left-back role.
The Scotland captain was a hot topic of conversation this season due to some dips in his performance standards. At 31, Robertson is approaching the latter stages of his career and is very much aware Liverpool are linked with a new signing in his position.
However, the Scottish powerhouse believes he still has what it takes to be Arne Slot’s first choice and has stressed that he is still fit and firing, even with potential younger competition coming in.
Andy Robertson responds to Milos Kerkez rumours
Speaking to BBC Sport Scotland, Robertson revealed his thoughts on the potential signing of Kerkez this summer.
“We're not daft, it looks as if a deal could potentially be done. But, until that is done, I've not even given that a second thought. I back myself, I've got confidence in my own ability and that drives me forward,” he said.
“I've had eight fantastic years at Liverpool in terms of winning trophies, being a mainstay in the team, which I'm incredibly proud of. I'm not getting any younger, I can't change my age, but I still believe I've got a lot to give and that's what I focus on. I focus on myself - you can't focus on other people or who you're competing with.
“I still believe I have a hell of a lot to give for however many years I can keep going. My body feels good at the minute. I can't tell you how I'll feel at 33 or 34, but I can tell you, at 31, I feel excellent.
“I've been fit for every game, I've not missed a training session and that's not a sign of someone who is slowing down.
“I've got a year left at Liverpool, I'm looking forward to a switch off, I'm looking forward to a holiday and then I'll look forward to pre-season. What the future holds after that? I've not given it too much thought.”
What is the latest on Milos Kerkez to Liverpool?
Slot is looking to put his stamp on the squad he has inherited from Jurgen Klopp, and changes are already underway. The Reds have signed their first new recruit of the window in Jeremie Frimpong, who could be joined by former Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz soon.
Liverpool are also pushing to finalise Kerkez’s arrival. Bournemouth are said to be demanding a £45 million transfer fee for the Hungarian, who started every single Premier League game for the Cherries this season.
