All the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding Chelsea as they prepare for the FIFA Club World Cup.
Chelsea are now just a matter of days away from returning to action in the form of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The Blues will bid to become world champions this summer, going up against the best all the continents have to offer - or at least by UEFA’s qualification parameters.
In the meantime, the Blues are battling to add to their squad before the early window shuts on June 10, with Liam Delap already snapped up. With that in mind, we have rounded up all the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding Stamford Bridge.
Gittens boost
Bundesliga reporter Christian Falk has provided a positive update on Chelsea’s reported bid to sign Borussia Dortmund attacker Jamie Gittens this summer. Gittens could be the next talent to depart Dortmund, and the Blues are very much in the market for a winger.
Falk has told CF Bayern Insider: “It wouldn’t be hard for the club to see Jamie Gittens move to the Premier League. Indeed, this is a move the England international has always signalled that he’s open to. With that in mind, Chelsea is a big option for Gittens, and I think this could be the logical next step.”
Chalobah responds
Trevoh Chalobah has played down transfer rumours amid claims from Football.London that Chelsea are open to selling the centre-back this summer.
"I see it as it's part of football, it's part of life," he said to the Football Daily podcast. “Sometimes you're gonna have things out of your control and all you can do it focus on the future and focus on what I can do to get myself ready. I didn't see it as a negative or a bad thing, I just took it in my stride as a positive, got my head down and focused on what I could do wherever I went to.”
Shearer on Delap
Alan Shearer is impressed with Chelsea’s signing of Liam Delap. He told The Rest Is Football: “I do like him. For £30m, I think it’s a no-brainer. I think Chelsea have got a great deal. I gather there were other big clubs in for him, so for Chelsea to get him at that price is, for me, very, very good business. He’s only going to get better…
“I think he’s a bit old-fashioned. He’s like a throwback from what a centre-forward was 20, 30 years ago when they were all in fashion. Aggressive, horrible to play against, doesn’t mind mixing it up, can run in behind. Obviously scores goals. The number of goals he scored in a really struggling team that is only going to get better.
“I think at his age, with the ability he’s got now, I think he’s got a really bright future. I would have liked to have seen Newcastle get him, but for whatever reason, he’s decided to go to Chelsea. I think that’s a really smart move for them.”
Carsley on Delap decision
England under-21s boss Lee Carsley has backed Delap after his decision to play in the FIFA Club World Cup instead of the under-21s Euros with England. He told reporters: “I'm definitely not disappointed. I'm delighted for Liam and his family. It's a brilliant thing for an English centre-forward to play in the Premier League at such a prestigious club like Chelsea.
"Hopefully, he'll do really well there and push for the senior team. We'll move on. We've moved on quite quickly. We've always known that two or three of the players could move to clubs that were playing in the Club World Cup. The Club World Cup hasn't come out of the blue. We've been preparing for this competition for two years, knowing that the Club World Cup was always in the background. It's not frustrating one bit. I definitely still see the importance of some of our players that will play in that competition. It's a brilliant thing for them to do."
