Liverpool “expect” Darwin Nunez to leave Anfield this summer as they seek an upgrade in the centre-forward role, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about Liverpool‘s attempts to sell Nunez this summer.

The Uruguayan is one of several attackers with an uncertain future under Arne Slot despite Liverpool’s comfortable Premier League title win last season, with Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa also on the outer.

Nunez’s most likely destination this summer is expected to be a club in the Saudi Pro League, but the Reds are yet to receive a formal approach for their number nine despite a clear willingness to sell him.

Sources have told Football Insider that although there are “question marks” over the long-term status of Jota and Chiesa at Anfield, Nunez’s future is much clearer and Liverpool higher-ups expect him to leave.

Of the 123 goals Liverpool scored across all competitions last season, Nunez managed just seven, and Football Insider revealed on 11 May that it’ll be Atletico Madrid or the Middle East for the 25-year-old.

Liverpool trio bound for exit door as new transfers incoming

Liverpool are one of several clubs keen on Hugo Ekitike this summer as they weigh up his £84million release clause at Eintracht Frankfurt, and such a transfer would spell doom for Nunez’s time at Anfield.

Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said that while Slot doesn’t want to be left short in the final third next season, Nunez is one of the first names he’ll be looking to move off the books this summer.

“Obviously, there’s been lots of speculation over a lot of attacking players at Liverpool already this summer”, he told Football Insider.

“Darwin Nunez, we expect him to go. Diogo Jota, there are question marks over him.

“Chiesa, is he going to stay or not? I don’t think Liverpool would want to lose too many attacking players ahead of next season.”

Liverpool to green-light Nunez exit to fund record-breaking bid

Liverpool certainly didn’t struggle in front of goal last season despite Nunez’s lack of output, but Slot hasn’t rested on his laurels this summer and has been in pursuit of both Florian Wirtz and Rayan Cherki.

Football Insider revealed on 2 June that Bayer Leverkusen have already rejected a record £110million bid from Liverpool for Wirtz, and it remains to be seen how high the Reds are willing to go for the German.

With Nunez likely to be sold for a price in the region of £50-60m – such is Liverpool’s valuation of the striker – Slot may be in a position where sales are required in order to get a deal for Wirtz over the line.
