The San Antonio Spurs are heading towards a complete roster transformation. The Silver and Black will look substantially different from when the Spurs earned the first overall pick and landed their superstar, Victor Wembanyama.
As they transform from rags to riches and set forth on a busy offseason, it is essential to understand what types of players should be on the radar. With a championship in mind, I have crafted the perfect team of player types to surround the Spurs' dynamic duo of De'Aaron Fox and Wembanyama.
Imagine playing a video game and having the franchise's reins in your hands. I would go after these types of players to ascend the Spurs to the highest pedestal in the sport. Don't think too deeply about it; this is a fun exercise.
Fox would love to run in transition with his backcourt mate
-----------------------------------------------------------
One thing that always stands out when watching De'Aaron Fox is his speed. Why not pair him up with another speedy guard to create an unstoppable transition offense?
This hypothetical pairing would be incredibly fun to watch. Fox and his guard duo run up and down the court, leaving everyone who stands in their way in the dust. Not only that, the speedsters would create an unstoppable transition offense. As we have seen with the Indiana Pacers, speed kills, and getting several free baskets in transition make a considerable impact.
Reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle currently mans the two spot and has some speed of his own. While he is a great player in this spot for now, there can be improvements to maximize Fox's speed. Hustlers like Houston's Amen Thompson, Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell, or Oklahoma City's Cason Wallace would break the sound barrier playing alongside Fox.
A three-and-D wing to bolster the defense
-----------------------------------------
While it's easy to ignore additions to the defense when Victor Wembanyama is manning it down below, perimeter defenders are still crucial. The Spurs need a strong perimeter threat to create a top-of-the-league defense.
Right now, the Spurs lack in this department at small forward. Jeremy Sochan is the closest you will get to this, but he has limitations as a scorer. The perfect player at this position can defend and shoot at a high level.
This archetype of player comes in the dozens in the NBA, but the very best are locked away. Players such as New York's OG Anunoby, New Orleans' Herb Jones, and Minnesota's Jaden McDaniels would be perfect players to complete a dominant Spurs defense. With shooting capabilities, these players would also add to the Spurs' significant need beyond the arc.
The Spurs need a do-it-all stretch four alongside Wembanyama
------------------------------------------------------------
Because Wembanyama fills so many roles as a center, the power forward next to him doesn't need to be a technical role player. At this position, I want to swing for the fences. De'Aaron Fox is a great co-star, but we can improve.
[This is where notable Spurs trade targets come into play.](https://airalamo.com/whispers-kevin-durant-trade-pointed-spurs-shocking-landing-spot) Already being floated around, Phoenix's Kevin Durant, Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo, and [Utah's Lauri Markkanen](https://airalamo.com/trade-targets-spurs-consider-not-named-giannis-antentokoumpo) would be perfect co-stars to Wembanyama in the frontcourt.
Could you imagine the new twin towers of Wembanyama and one of Antetokounmpo, or Durant? Wembanyama's elite shooting, paired with an equally unguardable demigod of a basketball player, would send shockwaves through the NBA. Any team would be frightened to play the Spurs with a duo like this.
