The list of targets that never came to be is huge in the world of football but especially in the realms of Manchester United.

Whether it’s a goalkeeper, striker or defender, there always seems to be the one that gets away in every summer and winter window, one that leaves you thinking about what could have been.

Now, with the summer transfer window in its prime, the Red Devils will be aiming to make sure they sign as many of their targets as possible.

However, this piece doesn’t focus on a target from this summer.

Instead, it focuses on one from last summer.

Todibo’s Story

The name Jean-Clair Todibo may be recognisable to many United fans who were following the club’s transfer business last summer.

In fact, the Reds were that close to signing Jean-Clair Todibo that everything had been agreed between Nice and Manchester United last summer.

However, this transfer fell through because INEOS owned Nice therefore preventing United from bringing the defender to the club.

The Frenchman then went on to join West Ham United on a season long loan.

During his time with the club, he was able to make 27 appearances in the Premier League – starting 20 of these. This meant he became a consistent starter inside the Hammers Premier League line-ups.

Now, following a successful spell with the club, the London side have officially decided to make the deal permanent signing the defender in preparation for the 2025-26 campaign.

An Alternative World?

If the Frenchman had joined Manchester United, could he have made a positive impact in the same way he has done at West Ham United or would he fall to the pressures that playing on the hallowed turf of Old Trafford ensues. Only time and his performances would have told us that answer.
