Over the last few years, the Philadelphia Eagles have rotated starting right guards on an annual basis.
The organization has had four different starters in that time period. First, it was Isaac Seumalo. Then, it was Cam Jurgens. Last season was Mekhi Becton.
This year? Well, this year is more complicated.
With Becton leaving for free agency this offseason, the Eagles are going to have another position battle at right guard.
Many players are set to compete for the role.
Former third-round pick Tyler Steen, late-round selection Trevor Keegan, recently acquired Kenyon Green, and even rookie Drew Kendall are expected to fight for snaps.
Through the first month of offseason workouts, though, it's clear there is an early favorite in the race.
Steen, the former Alabama offensive lineman who was originally set to start in 2024, is back again as the leader of the position battle. He has worked with with the starters at the start of OTAs, and should be expected to be an early favorite for the starting role once the regular season kicks off.
The fact that this is (once again) Steen's job to lose should not be overlooked. He has played sparingly over the last few seasons, and while there have been some positive reps, he hasn't been nearly as consistent as his coaching staff has hoped.
Steen was projected to be the starting right guard last year before being beaten out for the job by Becton.
Becton is gone, though. He signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.
The time for Steen is now. The Eagles seem hell-bent on trying to give him a chance once again. We'll see if he's up to the task this season.
