Bryan Mbeumo in action for Brentford
Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo was linked with Newcastle but the player prefers a move to Manchester United
Newcastle have football to look forward to next season and a welcome £100 million cash boost as a result.
, with Jordan Pickford pulling out all the stops to frustrate Newcastle's attempts, the Magpies clinched their spot in Europe's top competition thanks to 's 2-0 triumph over Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
However, it's clear that the Toon are eager to steer clear of another tense afternoon like the one they experienced last month, indicating a substantial recruitment push is on the horizon. Head coach Eddie Howe had hinted at this in the run-up to the match as they gear up for a massive summer transfer window.
Below are some of the latest Newcastle headlines as well as a view on each one...
Mbeumo 'U-turn'
According to the Telegraph, Newcastle's recruitment team identified Bryan Mbeumo as their leading transfer target weeks ago. The Magpies' top decision-makers were said to universally admire the Cameroon international before missing out to Manchester United.
However, the report adds that Mbeumo's wage demands and Brentford's price tag of more than £60m were deemed too expensive. It is claimed that Newcastle subsequently calmed their interest before the productive winger switched his focus towards Old Trafford.
ChronicleLive says: "Newcastle are unlikely to spend big on one player with several areas of the squad needing to be strengthened. Mbeumo would have been an excellent signing, but a new goalkeeper and centre-back are of more pressing concern this summer."
Defender 'interest'
Newcastle are reportedly among the clubs keen on Chelsea target Ismael Doukoure. TBR Football claim that the Magpies, Brentford, Brighton and Crystal Palace are all showing a keen interest in the centre-back.
Chelsea may hold an advantage however, with Doukoure playing for Strasbourg, who are owned by BlueCo like the Blues.
ChronicleLive says: "The fact Doukoure plays for Strasbourg should give Chelsea a clear advantage, but if, for whatever reason, he looks elsewhere, Newcastle could be the perfect destination, with Champions League football also on offer at St James' Park."
