Man Utd have been linked with a 47-time international defender
Manchester United are expected to be in the market for a left-back this summer and it’s been reported that a 27-year-old Premier League star sits at the top of their list of targets.
United are looking to bounce back from their worst season of the Premier League era after a 15th place finish last term and left-back is expected to be one of a number of positions that the Red Devils look to strengthen.
Ruben Amorim’s side have already confirmed the £62.5m signing ofMatheus Cunha after his Wolverhampton Wanderers release clause was met while it’s expected that Brentford hero Bryan Mbeumo could still follow after a stellar campaign which has seen him fire in 20 league goals in 38 matches.
Defence is the next area, the Portuguese coach wishes to strengthen and it’s widely understood that Pervis Estupinan is the name on United’s radar.
Man Utd expected to move for Pervis Estupinan
Ruben Amorim is renowned for playing with wing-backs and has already added Patrick Dorgu to his left side in January but is expected to further bolster that position with a more experienced Premier League name.
United currently have Harry Amass and Luke Shaw as the other two options for the LWB role but Amass has just five league appearances to his name which have all come in 2025 while Shaw has struggled with persistent injuries for most of the past two seasons.
New signing Diego Leon is set to join from Paraguay this summer after agreeing to join in January but is expected to play in the reserve team while he adapts to his new surroundings.
On the United Stand YouTube channel, Jacobs said that United are interested in Estupinan and could make an approach to secure his service over the coming weeks.
He said: “Man United are also looking at wing backs. Pervis Estupinan is one to watch – it’s unsure if it will properly develop but there’s definitely legs to it.”
Why Man United are interested in Pervis Estupinan
Estupinan has three seasons of Premier League experience and has been a part of a Brighton side that have finished in the top half for two of the three seasons he’s been there.
Prior to joining the Seagulls, Estupinan formed part of the Villarreal team that won the Europa League in 2021 by beating United and he also played a role in helping the Yellow Submarine reach the Champions League semi-final under Unai Emery against the odds.
The 47-time Ecuador international, who played in the 2022 World Cup has racked up 104 appearances for Brighton and has a record of five goals and 14 assists, showcasing his ability to make overlapping runs and create chances for his teammates.
Estupinan is blessed with excellent speed, agility, stamina and excellent defensive awareness. He’s seen as an asset at both ends of the pitch and was even referred to by former United fan favourite Antonio Valencia as one of the best full-backs in the world.
Valencia explained, via FIFA.com in 2023: “For me, Pervis Estupinan is the best left-back in the Premier League and maybe the best in the world. He is having an incredible season and he has room to improve. He’s strong defensively, he’s good on the ball, his crossing has improved, he’s very intelligent. I think he will continue to improve because he’s very professional.”
Estupinan is under contract at the Amex until 2027.
