David Beckham will be knighted next week. The legendary English footballer, a Manchester United legend and England captain for fifteen years, will be known as Sir David Beckham (and his wife Victoria, Lady Beckham).

Several newspapers in England, including The Sun and The Times, broke the news on Friday, although it won’t be officially announced by the British crown until next week, along with the rest of the recipients, who will be honored on King Charles’ birthday.

Fans of Beckham, who won 115 caps for England and, after Manchester United, had a brilliant career at Real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy and a final year at Paris Saint-Germain (when he retired in 2013), have been calling for him to be knighted for years.

He was appointed an Officer of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003. 19 years later, at her funeral, he stood in a 12-hour queue to see her coffin. He reportedly came close to being knighted in 2013, but then he was involved in a tax evasion case.

Now one of the greatest English players of all time and one of the most monastic is getting the recognition he has always wanted.
