Managing Leeds United - Nick Pope signs, wonderkid free agent and £35m double swoop

Leeds United know this summer transfer window will play a defining role in the club's future in their quest to stay in the Premier League.

The 49ers have reiterated their desire to make the Whites one of Europe's elite clubs, but will have to buck the recent trend of newly promoted Championship clubs suffering from relegation after just one season back in the top flight.

Paraag Marathe is expected to back Daniel Farke with a transfer budget in the region of £100million and a number of players have already been linked with a move to Elland Road this summer.

With the window now officially open, LeedsLive looks at just some of the things that we'd want to see happen in the next few weeks if we were in charge.

Nick Pope signs

Make no mistake, signing Nick Pope this summer would be a huge addition to Farke's squad. He may be 33-years-old, but he's shown no signs of slowing down and in you could argue he's got better since his move to Newcastle United.

The England international has saved Newcastle points at vital moments throughout recent campaigns and with Champions League football under his belt, he's really not a signing to be sniffed at - even if it is a short-term one.

Leeds need to improve their goalkeeping department and as long as survival is achieved next season, they'll have a platform to build on and kick on again. His arrival at St. James' Park helped transform the Magpies into European contenders from relegation strugglers and you can't downplay that impact.

Free agent bargains

While we know Leeds have a health transfer budget this summer, there are still a number of shrewd additions to pick up ahead of the new campaign.

Callum Wilson is a name that has been repeatedly mentioned in the same breath as the Whites with his current Newcastle United contract set to expire at the end of the month. He's struggled with injuries but on his day is a proven goalscorer.

Admittedly, the Whites will need to spend in forward areas if they want to avoid relegation but there is value to be found in the free agent market.

Roony Bardghji is one exciting talent, aged just 19, who is set to become a free agent later this month. The Copenhagen playmaker caught the in the Europa League earlier this season and has turned down an extension at the Danish club.

If the Whites were to sign him, it would be a real coup - though nothing more than a writer's suggestion at this stage. Tariq Lamptey is also out of contract this summer and would be nice pick ups for the Whites as they look to strengthen at full-back.

£35m arrivals

Christantus Uche continues to be linked with a move to Elland Road this summer with Farke looking to add more depth to his squad in wide positions. The 22-year-old star managed four goals and six assists in 33 La Liga matches last season and has a reported release clause in his contract around the £20million mark.

Chelsea were reportedly keeping an eye on the winger in January, which show his pedigree, while Wolves and Brentford are also said to be keen.

In defence, Leeds have been tipped to sign Dara O'Shea from Ipswich Town following their relegation from the top flight. The Tractorboys agreed a reported £15m deal so sign the Republic of Ireland international last summer and would bring a wealth of top flight experience, though not necessarily a name that would get supporters off their seat.
