Brentford are readying a formal move for Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, sources have told Football Insider.

Club chiefs are expecting Tottenham to trigger Thomas Frank’s release clause as they close in on a replacement for Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs sacked the 59-year-old on Friday (6 June) after two years in charge, despite him ending the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy with victory over Man United in the Europa League final last month.

A 17th place finish in the Premier League, with 22 defeats in 38 league this season, was enough to seal Postecoglou’s exit from the north London club.

Football Insider revealed (4 June) that Frank has emerged as Tottenham’s number one choice and updated on Saturday that a deal is accelerating following Friday evening’s dismissal of the Australian.

Brentford have their own succession plan in place and it is believed that McKenna is their number one choice to replace the Dane, 51.

The west London club are exploring a move behind the scenes and they will make a formal approach if talks with the Northern Irishman progress well.

McKenna is rated highly by Brentford’s recruitment team, and they believe he could be an ideal fit despite overseeing Ipswich‘s relegation to the Championship last season.

The former Man United coach has been in charge at Portman Road since 2021, steering the club to back-to-back promotions and Ipswich’s first season in the Premier League in over 20 years.

Ultimately, that return to the top-flight would end in disappointment, with the Tractor Boys finishing 19th in the table this season, 16 points from safety.

That confirmed their immediate return to the Championship, although McKenna‘s overall reputation has still been enhanced since he took charge at Portman Road.

After the club had won promotion at the end of the 2023/24 season, the 39-year-old had put pen to paper on a new four-year contract with Ipswich.

That secures his future at Portman Road until the end of the 2027/28 season, ensuring Brentford will have to agree a deal with the Tractor Boys if they are to make McKenna their new manager should Frank leave.
