Alan Shearer has backed Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah to break his long-standing Premier League goal record - on one condition.
Alan Shearer believes Mohamed Salah can break his Premier League goal record providing he stays at Liverpool.
As it stands, the Egyptian has 186 goals - 74 behind the Newcastle United legend. A staggering campaign saw Salah netting 29 times in the top flight to fire Liverpool to the title.
If he keeps up the same form under Arne Slot, the 32-year-old would break Shearer’s long-standing record in less than three seasons. Salah penned a recent contract extension to keep him at Anfield until 2027 amid intense speculation over his future.
Mohamed Salah wants to play until 40
In a recent interview after signing the deal, the Reds talisman insisted he could play until 40. However, Salah did hint at possibly joining the Saudi Pro League further down the line - which would be music to Shearer’s ears.
"If you ask me for my opinion, I think I can play until the age of 39 or 40 but, if I felt before that I wanted to stop, I would quit,” Salah told ON Sports. “I have achieved a lot of things. My contract was up at Liverpool and I would have gone to Saudi but we finalised the deal with Liverpool."
"I still have a good relationship with them (Saudi Pro League) and I always stay in contact with them. Yes, we were talking to each other. I don't know what is going to happen, but I am happy here in Liverpool and I am staying here for the next two years. Then I will see what I will do next."
Alan Shearer believes Mo Salah can do it
Shearer - who endured two significant knee injuries in his career - highlighted Salah’s fitness as a reason why he could break the record. He told Betfair: “Mo Salah has also suggested that he could play till he's 40. Regardless of that, he may get the Premier League goals record anyway with Liverpool because, when you look at how he's performed, he's always been, really, really consistent and he very rarely misses games. If he does stay for that length of time then there's a big chance he'll get to 260 plus goals.”
Alan Shearer praises Cristiano Ronaldo
The Toon icon also hailed Cristiano Ronaldo for performing at the highest level despite turning 41 next season. He fired Portugal into the Nations League final with a winner against Germany in midweek.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is not as good as he was,” Shearer added. “It's impossible to be at that age but he's still going somehow and scoring goals. I haven't got a clue what's going on with him. He's still playing for Portugal, they won't retire him, he'll have to retire himself.
“Whether he wants to play in the Club World Cup, and the World Cup next year, I don't know but it'll be really interesting to see what happens with him and what his next step is.
You have to be surprised to see him still doing it at his age. To be playing at 40 at any level is remarkable. To still be playing and scoring for Portugal is even more remarkable but he's been just that all through his career.”
