Nélson Semedo rejects Benfica – Doesn’t want the wage cut, which helps Wolves

Nélson Semedo has turned down a return to Benfica as he doesn’t want to accept a wage cut, which may end up helping Wolverhampton Wanderers’ hopes of keeping him.

A Bola report today that Semedo is out of the running for Benfica, who had dreamed of bringing the right-back back to the club this summer.

That was always considered a difficult task as the Wolves star has a list of suitors around him and currently earns a salary which exceeds the cap currently at Benfica.

That means he is looking for offers and conditions which Benfica are not able to offer, even though his contract at Wolves is coming to an end.

And, according to A Bola, it means any possibility of him returning to the Portuguese club can now be dismissed. It’s already been ruled out despite him being available on a free.

The 31-year-old has the advantage of being able to wait and choose his offers and despite a return to Benfica pulling at the heart strings, it would not satisfy him financially.

He instead wants to sign the ‘contract of a lifetime’ at this point in his career but a salary cap of €2m per year means Benfica can’t get close to the €4m a year he currently earns at Wolves.
