Russell Martin wants to raid Leicester City for Rangers transfer

Leicester City managerial target Russell Martin could swoop to take Conor Coady out of the club and with him to Rangers.

Martin has been named boss at Ibrox after weeks of speculation that he would be succeeding Ruud van Nistelrooy at the King Power Stadium.

But he may get the opportunity to manage City centre-back Coady anyway with the Daily Record reporting that the 32-year-old is on Rangers’ radar.

They’re looking for an experienced centre-back amid a couple of potential departures and the club’s sporting director Kevin Thelwell knows Coady from their time together at Everton.

Coady has one year remaining on his City contract and amid their concerns around Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the club would likely consider any bid that allowed them to make a profit.

It means there are doubts over all of the senior centre-backs in City’s squad and it looks like it will be a key area to strengthen in the summer transfer window.

Wout Faes is expected to leave amid reported interest from Lazio and elsewhere around Europe, while Caleb Okoli has consistently been linked with a return to Italy.

Jannik Vestergaard has now said he plans to stay, but there were previous reports that his contract could be cancelled, while his Denmark manager has urged him to find a club where he will play regularly.

And while City have Ben Nelson coming back into the fold, it’s not out of the question that he is sold for PSR purposes, the homegrown centre-back likely to fetch a decent fee that would go into the books as ‘pure profit’.

Coady has been with City for two seasons since joining from Wolves for £7.5m. Injury in pre-season of his first campaign saw him lose his spot to Vestergaard and he featured only occasionally in the club’s promotion.

He played more often this past season, making 22 Premier League appearances, and finished the campaign as part of van Nistelrooy’s first-choice back-line, with City improving defensively in the final weeks.
