Nottingham Forest star stretchered off to leave manager sweating over potential injury

Nottingham Forest will hope Neco Williams has not suffered a serious ankle injury after the full-back was stretchered off during Wales’ 3-0 win over Liechtenstein.

Williams lasted just 21 minutes on Friday night, going down in pain after crossing from the byline.

After receiving treatment, he twice attempted to get back to his feet and continue, but eventually slumped back to the ground and was taken off on a stretcher.

“Give us a few hours,” Wales manager Craig Bellamy said on Friday night. “You just don't know. We'll find out tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

“The medical staff will be racing with it and make sure he's looked after, of course. We'll find out a lot more tomorrow.”

For Wales, the hope will be that Williams can shake off the injury in time for Monday’s trip to Belgium in what looks to be the toughest game in their World Cup qualifying group.

Williams has started all nine games of Bellamy’s tenure in which they have gone unbeaten.

For Forest, the priority will be ensuring Williams has not suffered a serious injury and that playing again on Monday doesn’t exacerbate the issue to the point of it affecting his involvement at club level in the new season.

Williams was a key player under Nuno Espirito Santo this past season, the 24-year-old playing all but three Premier League matches.

He finished the campaign on a run of 24 straight league starts, mostly at left-back, a streak going back to early December.

Williams registered three assists and one goal, scoring in the 7-0 thrashing of Brighton.
