Robbie Williams mocks Arsenal with European trophy claim during concert at Emirates after Tottenham’s Europa League win

close

British pop star Robbie Williams mocked Arsenal during a live performance by cheekily referring to Tottenham Hotspur's Europa League victory last month. The Gunners reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season following a thumping 5-1 aggregate victory over Real Madrid.

However, eventual winners PSG halted their run as they won 3-1 on aggregate en route to lifting the trophy in Munich. Having also lost the Premier League title race to Liverpool and getting ousted from the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, Mikel Arteta's side finished trophyless despite another promising campaign.

Rubbing salt on their wounds was the spectacle of their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur lifting the Europa League trophy to end a 17-year wait for silverware. Spurs beat domestic rivals Manchester United 1-0 in the final, as Brennan Johnson struck the only goal of the game to earn them a historic first European title.

Williams, a popular British singer, mocked Arsenal during his performance at the Emirates Stadium, their home ground. He said (via SPORTbible on Instagram):

"How far away are Arsenal from a European trophy? 4 f*king miles! Wahey!"

That was a cheeky dig at the Gunners for Tottenham's European glory as 'four miles' is the distance between the home stadiums of each side.

For all their achievements in English football, Arsenal are yet to win a major European trophy. They've reached the final of Champions League, Europa League, and the UEFA Cup once each, losing on every occasion.

Tottenham Hotspur eyeing second European trophy at Super Cup against PSG

Thanks to their Europa League win, Tottenham Hotspur secured a place in the UEFA Super Cup, where they will take on Champions League winners PSG.

Interestingly, it will be the first appearance in this one-off game for both sides and whoever wins it will be a first-time winner of the cup.

Spurs will be without the man who led them to the title as Ange Postecoglu was sacked by the club on June 7. Postecoglou's replacement will have a difficult task in their first official game in-charge against a young, dynamic and free-scoring Parisian team.
