Neco Williams hopes to be fit for pre-season after picking up a “frustrating” ankle injury on international duty.
The Nottingham Forest full-back was stretchered off during Wales’ 3-0 win over Liechtenstein on Friday night, making him a doubt for Monday’s World Cup qualifier against Belgium.
While manager Craig Bellamy did not rule Williams out of the game, the 24-year-old has done so himself.
Writing on social media, Williams outlined that his priority is now on recovery and ensuring that he is ready for when Forest return to pre-season.
He said: “So frustrating to pick up this injury at the end of the season but now it’s rest, recover and get back ready for pre-season.”
The news will be a blow to Bellamy, who has started Williams in all nine of his matches in charge and would have wanted him available for what looks like Wales’ toughest World Cup qualifier away to Belgium.
But the suggestions that Williams will be back in pre-season bodes well for Forest, with the full-back set to play a key part again next season.
He started all of the club’s final 24 Premier League matches this campaign, a run that went back to December, and made 35 league appearances in total, scoring one goal and adding three assists.
Forest can also do without injury issues given their workload will rise in the new season as they return to European football.
