Aston Villa man on facing Lamine Yamal – And recent conversation with Ronald Koeman

Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen has detailed what it was like to come up against Spain and Barcelona star Lamine Yamal on his international debut.

The Aston Villa full-back has been waiting for his chance to impress on the international stage, with just one appearance for the senior Dutch side so far.

That came back in March in the second leg of a quarter-final clash with Spain, which the European champions eventually won 8-7 on penalties.

It was a big moment for him as he played 120 minutes and scored a superb solo goal on his international debut. It was no easy game for him, though, as it saw him coming up against world’s rising star, Lamine Yamal.

“I was allowed to make their debut and could score immediately, so I will never forget that. Unfortunately, we lost after penalty kicks, but I am very proud,” he said.

“You just have to be yourself. I never really look at the opponent. Of course he is a great talent. He is super young, and everyone knows what he is capable of. I just wanted to show myself and I used to big games. I went in 100%, played good duels and scored. I have certainly left a good impression, and I am happy with that.”

Frustratingly, Maatsen is yet to return for the Netherlands, with Ronaldo Koeman preferring to keep him in the youth set up for now.

That will see the Aston Villa defender playing in the U21 European Championships this summer, in what will be his final appearances in that set up as he ages out.

Some players would be annoyed about missing out on the senior side, but Maatsen insists he’s not one of them.

“I’ve spoken to coach Ronald Koeman,” he added.

“He called me and told me I can get out of front of both teams. There are also some players back from injuries and he chooses that now.

“I don’t mind, because it’s a good tournament to play. Now that I’m here, knowing that this is my last tournament on behalf of the Dutch Junior Team, I want to win the European Championship. That’s what we’re going for.”
