Aston Villa’s Champions League failure creating transfer optimism – Talks with player ongoing

Vasco de Gama are hoping that Aston Villa’s failure to qualify for the Champions League will help their efforts to secure Philippe Coutinho on a permanent basis.

That’s according to O Tempo, who report that the Brazilian side remain optimistic about securing the 32-year-old permanently.

Reports throughout this week have explained that Vasco are working to get Coutinho, who is currently on loan at Vasco from Aston Villa. That deal expires on June 30th, and the various parties are now working out where his future lies.

At this moment in time the expectation is that Coutinho and Aston Villa will agree to terminate his contract. His current deal at Villa Park expires in June 2026.

Vasco have until the end of this moth to work something out and both Villa and Coutinho are holding talks over an ‘amicable termination’. That would give him a clear path to sign for the Brazilian club on a permanent basis.

They are optimistic an agreement will be reached. Part of that optimism comes from Aston Villa missing out on the Champions League, meaning they need to reduce their payroll and get players with big salaries, like Coutinho, off of the books.

Fortunately, they have a good relationship with the midfielder, further adding to Vasco’s confidence an agreement can be reached.
