Arsenal are on the brink of completing a surprise deal for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, with the transfer now in its final stages, according to respected journalistDavid Ornstein.
The Gunners are set to trigger the 30-year-old Spaniard’s £5 million release clause, an astonishingly low fee compared to the world-record £72 million Chelsea paid to sign him from Athletic Bilbao in 2018. Kepa has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal, and a long-term contract is expected to be signed imminently.
Kepa is being brought in as a backup to Arsenal’s current No. 1, David Raya, following the departure of loan keeper Neto, who returned to Bournemouth. Arsenal see the deal as a low-risk, high-value addition to their squad, with manager Mikel Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta backing the move.
The veteran goalkeeper spent the 2024–25 campaign on loan at Bournemouth, keeping nine clean sheets in 35 appearances and playing a key role in their ninth-place Premier League finish. The previous season, he had a loan spell at Real Madrid, where he featured 20 times.

While Kepa’s time at Chelsea was marked by inconsistency and spells as second-choice behind Edouard Mendy, he has rebuilt his reputation with resilience and strong performances in recent loan stints. Arsenal believe his experience and professionalism make him an ideal deputy for Raya.

Ornstein reports that Arsenal’s negotiations with both Chelsea and the player’s representatives have progressed smoothly, with the Gunners beating competition from several other suitors. Bournemouth were keen to retain Kepa permanently after his strong season, and other European clubs had also shown interest, drawn by his modest release clause.

Despite the interest, Arsenal’s proactive approach and clear vision for Kepa’s role gave them the edge. The Spaniard is understood to be fully aware of his place in the pecking order but is ready to compete and contribute when called upon.
The deal continues Arsenal’s recent pattern of recruiting from Chelsea, having previously brought in Kai Havertz, Jorginho, and Raheem Sterling from their London rivals. While opinions on such moves have varied among fans, many see the Kepa signing as smart business given the low cost and his top-level experience.
Reactions from supporters have been mixed, with some praising the move as a “bargain” and a sensible backup solution, while others have voiced doubts about his ability to challenge Raya for the starting role.
Final confirmation of the transfer is expected soon, with Kepa likely to link up with Arsenal during pre-season preparations.
