Kepa Arrizabalaga transfer truth as Arsenal close in on bargain Chelsea deal

Arsenal are close to agreeing a deal to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea.

Mikel Arteta's side are in the market to recruit a back-up goalkeeper with Neto returning to Bournemouth at the end of his loan.

The Gunners had targeted Espanyol's Joan Garcia, but Barcelona look to have won the race for the 24-year-old Spain international.

Indeed, Arsenal have turned their attention to Kepa and are closing in on agreement to bring the former Athletic Club and Real Madrid man to the Emirates Stadium. football.london understands that the Gunners are set to activate his £5 million release clause to secure his services.

Arsenal see Kepa as a potential bargain, signing a goalkeeper with Premier League and Champions League experience for a reasonable fee. He would become their first summer arrival and provide support and competition to first-choice 'keeper David Raya.

Kepa made 35 appearances for Bournemouth last season and kept nine clean sheets as the Cherries finished ninth in the Premier League, their joint-best finish with 56 points.

The 13-cap Spain international, who won the Champions League at Chelsea in 2021, became the world's most expensive goalkeeper after he made the £71.6m move to the Blues from Athletic Club seven years ago.

He has since made 163 first-team appearances for the Blues, though he hasn't featured since the 2022/23 season when Graham Potter was the head coach.

Kepa's move to Arsenal comes a matter of months after he hinted that could remain at Bournemouth beyond the end of the season.

Speaking back in April, Kepa said: "Obviously what I can say is that I'm really happy and I'm enjoying my playing time here. I think I'm showing that and I'm feeling well on the pitch.

"It's not the time to think about the future, we're going to take the decision, we're in touch with everybody and now I'm under contract with Chelsea.

"We have some conversations to have, they will happen in the next few weeks and then we'll decide."

Elsewhere, Arsenal are in the market for a new No.9. Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta has made signing a centre forward his prime concern, with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko both in the running.
