Newcastle United could be set to miss out on securing the services of Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah with Italian champions Napoli interested in the player.

The 25-year-old could be set to earn his first England cap after being called up to the national team by former boss Thomas Tuchel to face Andorra and Senegal.

Chalobah was recalled from a loan spell at Crystal Palace in January and featured prominently for the remainder of the season, helping the Blues to a fourth place finish and winning the UEFA Conference League.

Napoli, under former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, captured their fourth Scudetto on the final day of Serie A, piping Inter Milan to the tile by a single point.

It appears that Conte will remain in Naples for another season and according to the Telegraph, the club will return to his employers once more for recruitment after signing Chalobah's former Chelsea team-mate Romelu Lukaku last summer.

Reports have suggested Chelsea could sell up to 14 players to comply with FFP and PSR regulations as they prepare to return to Europe's premium competition.

Eddie Howe looks determined to capitalise on this by swooping for the centre-back who makes up a list of potential defensive signings alongside former Palace partner, Marc Guehi.

The Magpies' chances of snagging Guehi, who is understood to be a priority ahead of the £40m-rated Chalobah, away from Palace could be boosted by recent reports that the Eagles may sign Sporting's Ousmane Diomande.

The Ivorian defender has also been linked with a move to St. James' Park.

During his first senior call-up with the national team, the Chelsea defender was asked about his future, replying: "For me, I just have to focus on the now, leave all the noise out there that is surrounding me and my future.”
