Dylan Harper is the no-brainer choice for the Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs have major decisions to make leading up to the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25. As time ticks away, the team is undoubtedly completing the scouting process for the incoming class of players. Simultaneously, they must determine whether to sacrifice assets for another star player, creating a big three alongside Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox.

The second overall pick in the draft is one of their top assets besides Fox, Wembanyama, and the Rookie of the Year, Stephon Castle. Rumors have swirled about potential trades for stars and trades back to collect more assets. The Spurs are a franchise known for not “skipping steps.” Their fans seem to be aligned with that approach, according to our latest SB Nation Reacts poll.

Over three-fourths of voters want San Antonio to select the best player available at number two, Dylan Harper.

Under most circumstances, this would be a no-brainer selection. Heck, if you’d have told Spurs fans in January they’d be getting Harper in the draft, they’d be through the roof. But the acquisition of Fox and Castle’s rookie season has suddenly given the Spurs a loaded backcourt. Still, Harper is the second-best prospect in the draft behind Cooper Flagg, even if the fit may be more awkward than many would like.

At 6-foot-6, Harper has the height to play off the ball alongside another guard. He shot 37% on catch-and-shoot jump shots and showed some signs of smart off-ball cutting. Watch an NBA Finals game, and you’ll immediately notice that having multiple players who can handle the ball, initiate/create offense, and attack off the dribble is key to winning on the biggest stage. The Thunder have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams, the Pacers have Tyrese Haliburton and Andrew Nembhard. San Antonio could use more ball-handlers and players who can create offense, even if there is some positional overlap.
