Manchester United are looking to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad this summer after a tough 2024-25 campaign
Manchester United will want to avoid a repeat of their disastrous 2024-25 season after failing to win any silverware and finishing 15th in the Premier League - their worst position in the current era.
There are shoots of optimism ahead of the next campaign, however. Matheus Cunha is officially a United player after completing his £62.5m move from Wolves last week while the Red Devils are advancing with a deal for Brentford ace Bryan Mbeumo. He has rejected interest from Arsenal and Newcastle United in favour of a move to Old Trafford.
Sporting CP superstar Viktor Gyokeres is also linked with a move to the Red Devils and is said to be open to a move to Manchester. United could get a clear run at the prolific striker with Arsenal appearing to focus their attention on RB Leipzig ace Benjamin Sesko. The Red Devils will need to sell some players in order to make a deal financially possible, however.
Man Utd eyeing defensive reinforcements
While the current focus is to improve United’s attack - the Red Devils do need to strengthen in other areas of the pitch. Amorim has around £100m to spend this summer after missing out on Champions League football with Cunha and Mbeumo set to take up that budget.
The Red Devils do have a number of players they are looking to move on. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho are all poised to leave this summer and their exits could generate over £150m.
That could allow Amorim to reunite with Gyokeres and strengthen in other areas. One position United could benefit from improving is at centre-back, with Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof leaving the club.
According to reports in Portugal, they could make a firm move for Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande in the coming days.
Man Utd keeping tabs on Ousmane Diomande after Crystal Palace approach
Portuguese outlet A Bola has reported that United’s Premier League rivals Crystal Palace have made the first move for Diomande with an approach to Sporting. The Portuguese outfit have insisted that they will only sell the defender for £51m.
It is reported that the Red Devils are keeping tabs on the situation and could now proceed with a proposal in the coming days, as they ensure to avoid losing out in the race for Diomande. Palace have been handed a financial boost after winning the FA Cup and qualifying for the Europa League. They will be keen to strengthen their ranks to challenge on more fronts.
Diomande, 21, has been with Sporting since 2023 and Amorim could be keen to reunite with one of his former stars. With Lisandro Martinez injured and Harry Maguire in the last year of his contract, Diomande could be someone to help form the future of a back three under Amorim, alongside the likes of Leny Yoro. Diomande’s Sporting CP teammate Goncalo Inacio has also been linked with a possible switch to Old Trafford.
The Portuguese outfit is highly unlikely to sanction departures for both stars this summer.
